409 — Muhammad informed us; he said: Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Hasan narrated to us; he said: Muhammad ibn Uthman narrated to us; he said: Muhammad ibn Imran ibn Abi Layla narrated to us; he said: Waki‘ narrated to me: When the matter concerning the man had unfolded as it did, Ibn Abi Layla said to him, “Who created you?” He replied, “Allah.” He asked, “Then who created your speech?” He replied, “Allah.” He said ⦗273⦘, “I have been refuted.” He said, “You have spoken the truth; so what do you now say?” He replied, “Indeed, I repent to Allah.”
Ibn Abi Layla then sent two trustworthy men with him, to bring him before one of the study circles in the mosque. They were to say to its members: “He used to say that the Quran is created, but he has repented and recanted. If you hear him say anything, report it to me.”
Musa ibn Isa ordered a guard, saying, “Do not let him issue legal rulings in the mosque.” Thus, whenever he prayed, the guard would say, “Go to your home.” He would reply, “Let me glorify Allah.” But the guard would say, “Not even a word.” He would not leave him until he made him stand and depart.
When Muhammad ibn Sulayman arrived, he gathered a group of people and spoke to him. He then permitted him, and he sat in the mosque.
