405—Abd Allah ibn Muslim ibn Yahya informed us: al-Husayn ibn Isma'il informed us; Sallam ibn Salim narrated to us; Musa ibn Ibrahim al-Warraq narrated to us; Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak informed us, saying: “For forty-nine years, I have heard people say: Whoever declares that the Quran is created, his wife is irrevocably divorced from him by three pronouncements.”
I said, “Why is that?” He replied, “Because his wife is a Muslim woman, and a Muslim woman cannot remain married to a disbeliever.”
I say: Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak met a number of the Followers, such as Sulayman al-Taymi, Humayd al-Tawil, and others besides them. In his time, there was no one in Islam who travelled more extensively than he did, sought knowledge more diligently, possessed it more comprehensively, knew it better, had finer conduct, or followed a more commendable path. Perhaps he narrated from a thousand shaykhs among the Followers. What consensus could be stronger than this?
