378 — Ja‘far ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Ya‘qub informed us: Muhammad ibn Harun al-Ruwayani informed us: Abu al-Rabi‘ narrated to us: Abu ‘Awanah narrated to us, from Abu Sinan, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Abi al-Hudhayl, from Hanzalah, from Khuwaylid al-‘Anazi, who said ⦗258⦘: ‘Abd Allah took me by the hand, and when we came to a place overlooking the marketplace, he looked toward it and said: “O Allah, I ask You for its good and the good of its people, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of its people.”

He said: He then passed by a man swearing by a surah of the Quran, or by a verse. ‘Abd Allah pressed my hand and said: “Do you think he will offer expiation? Indeed, every verse in it constitutes an oath.”
