345—Al-Husayn ibn Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Tabari informed us: Ibrahim ibn Ahmad al-Mili narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Adam narrated to us: Abu Zayd Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn Tarif narrated to us: Abu Hatim Yahya ibn Zakariyya al-Umawi narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafiʿi narrated to us, saying: One of our companions told me: A Muslim and a Jew brought a dispute before ʿIsa ibn Aban, who was the judge of Basra and subscribed to the views of those people. The oath fell upon the Muslim, so the Jew said to him, “Make him swear.” He said, “Swear by Allah, besides whom there is no god.” ⦗237⦘
The Jew said to the judge, “You maintain that the Quran is created, while ‘by Allah, besides whom there is no god’ occurs in the Quran. So make him swear to me by the Creator, not by that which is created.” ʿIsa was confounded by this and said, “Both of you leave, until I consider your case.”
