343—Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Umar informed us: Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hatim informed us: Al-Rabiʿ ibn Sulayman al-Muradi narrated to us in Egypt, at the first meeting I had with him in the congregational mosque. I asked him about this report, for I had written it from Abu Bakr ibn al-Qasim, from him, before leaving for Egypt. Al-Rabiʿ ibn Sulayman then narrated to me, saying: I heard al-Shafiʿi say, “Whoever swears by one of Allah’s Names and then breaks his oath must offer expiation, because the Name of Allah is uncreated. But whoever swears by the Kaʿbah, or by Safa and Marwah, is not required to offer expiation, because they are created, whereas that is uncreated.”
344—Ubayd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad informed us: Ali ibn Ibrahim ibn ʿIsa al-Mustamli informed us: Abu Nuʿaym al-Jurjani narrated to us: Al-Rabiʿ narrated to us, saying: Al-Shafiʿi said, “Whoever swears by Allah or by one of Allah’s Names must offer expiation.”
