331—Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Ziyad al-Naysaburi informed us; he said: Makki ibn Abdan informed us; he said: Abd Allah ibn Hashim informed us; he said: Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us; he said: Kahmas informed us.

332—Ahmad ibn Umar informed us; Ali ibn Abd Allah informed us; he said: Ahmad ibn Sinan informed us; he said: Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, from Kahmas ibn al-Hasan, from Abd Allah ibn Buraydah, from Yahya ibn Ya‘mar, from Abd Allah ibn Umar, who said: Umar ibn al-Khattab narrated to me, saying: “One day, while we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, a man suddenly appeared before us, with exceedingly white clothes and exceedingly black hair. No sign of travel was visible upon him, yet none of us knew him. He came and sat beside the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, placing his knees against his knees and his hands upon his thighs. Then he said, ‘O Muhammad, tell me about Islam.’

He said: ‘Islam is to testify that there is no god worthy of worship but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; to establish the prayer; to give zakah; to fast Ramadan; and to make pilgrimage to the House, if you are able to undertake the journey.’

He said, ‘You have spoken the truth.’ ⦗227⦘ We were astonished that he would question him and then affirm him. He then said, ‘Tell me about faith.’

He said: ‘That you believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His messengers, the Last Day, and the divine decree, both its good and its evil.’

He said, ‘You have spoken the truth.’ The wording is that of Ibn Sinan’s narration. It was recorded by Muslim and Abu Dawud.
