330—Muhammad ibn Ja‘far al-Nahwi informed us; he said: Ubayd Allah ibn Thabit al-Hariri informed us; he said: Ahmad ibn Mansur narrated to us; he said: Abu Salih narrated to us; he said: Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn Abbas, concerning the saying of Allah, Exalted is He: “Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth.” He said: Allah, glorified is He, guides the inhabitants of heaven and the inhabitants of the earth. The likeness of His guidance in the believer’s heart is that of pure oil which gives light before fire touches it; when fire touches it, it increases in brightness upon brightness. Likewise, guidance operates in the believer’s heart before knowledge comes to him; then, when knowledge comes to him, he increases in guidance upon guidance and light upon light. This is as Abraham, peace be upon him, said before recognition came to him: “This is my Lord,” when he saw the stars ⦗226⦘ before anyone had informed him that he had a Lord. Then, when Allah informed him that He was his Lord, he increased in guidance upon guidance.
