2821 – Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Sahl informed us; he said: ‘Isa ibn Hamid narrated to us; he said: Ahmad ibn al-Salt narrated to us; he said: Ibn Numayr, my uncle Jubarah ibn Mughalis, and Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah all said: Yahya ibn Yaman narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Layth, from Mujahid, who said: John son of Zechariah said, “My Lord, cause the people of the earth to mention me only with good.” ⦗1549⦘ Allah revealed: “O John, I have not ordained this even for Myself—shall I confer it upon you?”
