2797 – ʿAlī ibn ʿUmar informed us; Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad related to us, saying: “ʿAbbās al-Dūrī narrated to us; he said: ‘Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī narrated to us; he said: “Shuʿbah told them, on the authority of Yazīd ibn Khumayr, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr, from his father, who said:

‘I said to al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī, “People allege that you want the Caliphate.” He replied, “The foremost chiefs of the Arabs were once in my hand: they would make peace with whomever I made peace and fight whomever I fought. Yet I abandoned it, seeking Allah’s mercy. Then other people were tested with it…”’ ”
