2794 – Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Qasim informed us; Ahmad ibn Sulayman also informed us; … ; Shababa narrated to us, saying: Ishaq ibn Yahya ibn Talha ibn ‘Ubayd Allah narrated to us; he said: Mujahid narrated to us:
A man from Banu Makhzum travelled to ‘Umar seeking redress against Abu Sufyan. He said, “Commander of the Believers, Abu Sufyan has wronged me concerning my boundary in Mecca.”
‘Umar replied, “I know that boundary very well; more than once you and I played on it when we were boys. When you reach Mecca, come to me.”
When ‘Umar arrived in Mecca, the Makhzumi came to him, and Abu Sufyan was brought along. ‘Umar went with him to that boundary and said, “Move it, Abu Sufyan—pick up this ⦗1536⦘ stone from here and set it over there.”
Abu Sufyan said, “By Allah, you shall certainly not do that.” ‘Umar replied, “By Allah, I most certainly shall.” He then struck him with his whip and said, “Pick it up—may your mother be bereft of you!” So Abu Sufyan picked it up and placed it where ‘Umar had ordered.
It seemed that ‘Umar felt something inside over what he had done to Abu Sufyan, so he faced the Ka‘ba and said, “O Allah, to You belongs all praise: You did not cause me to die until You made me prevail over Abu Sufyan’s whim and humbled him for me through Islam.”
Abu Sufyan then faced the Ka‘ba and said, “O Allah, to You belongs all praise: You did not cause me to die until You put into my heart of Islam that by which You humbled me before ‘Umar.”
