The Muslims would neither look at Abū Sufyān nor sit with him. So he said to the Prophet ﷺ, “Grant me three requests.” He replied, “Yes.” Abū Sufyān said, “I have the finest and most beautiful woman among the Arabs—Umm Ḥabībah bint Abī Sufyān—let me marry her to you.” He said, “Yes.” He continued, “Appoint Muʿāwiyah as your scribe.” He said, “Yes.” Then he said, “And supply me so that I may fight the unbelievers just as I used to fight the Muslims.” He said, “Yes.”
Muslim also recorded this report through ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm and Aḥmad ibn Jaʿfar al-Maʿqarī, from al-Naḍr ibn Muḥammad.
