2775 – Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us. He said: Yaḥyā ibn Muḥammad ibn Ṣāʿid narrated to us. He said: al-Zubayr ibn Bakkār narrated to us. He said: ʿAbd al-Majīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated to us, from Yāsīn, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUrwah, from Abū Muslim al-Khawlānī, that Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān once addressed the people after he had withheld the stipends for two or three months. Abū Muslim called out, “Muʿāwiyah, this wealth does not belong to you, nor to your father, nor to your mother ⦗1526⦘.”
Muʿāwiyah motioned for the people to stay where they were, went down, performed ghusl (a full ritual bath), then returned and said, “People, Abū Muslim has said that this wealth is not my father’s or my mother’s—and Abū Muslim has spoken the truth. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Anger is from Satan, Satan was created from fire, and water extinguishes fire. So when one of you becomes angry, let him bathe.’
Report for your stipends tomorrow, by the blessing of Allah.”
