2766 – ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUmar narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to him; ʿAbbās ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Hārūn—that is, Ibn Maʿrūf—narrated to us; Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated: “Muʿāwiyah asked Ziyād, ‘Who is the most eloquent of people?’ He replied, ‘You are, O Commander of the Believers.’ Muʿāwiyah said, ‘I place you under oath.’ Ziyād responded, ‘Since you have bound me by an oath, then it is ʿĀʾishah.’ Muʿāwiyah remarked, ‘Indeed, whenever she opened a door intending to shut it, she shut it; and whenever she shut a door intending to open it, she opened it.’
