2726 – ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Aḥmad reported to us; he said: Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-ʿAlāʾ reported to us; he said: Abū ʿUbaydah ibn Abī al-Safar reported to us; he said: Abū Ghassān reported to us; he said: Isrāʾīl narrated from ʿAbd al-Aʿlā, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās:
A man insulted one of al-ʿAbbās’s deceased forefathers, so al-ʿAbbās struck him on the face. The man’s people came and said, “By Allah, we will strike him as he struck our man.” They armed themselves, and news of this reached the Prophet. He ascended the pulpit and said, “People, who among all the inhabitants of the earth is most honoured in the sight of Allah?” They replied, “You are.” He said, “Indeed al-ʿAbbās is part of me and I am part of him. Do not abuse our dead and thereby harm our living.” They responded, “We seek Allah’s protection from your anger, O Messenger of Allah.”
