2701 – ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn Yaʿqūb related to us; he said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ḥātim narrated to us; he said: ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Awdi narrated to us; he said: Abū Usāmah narrated to us, from Hishām — and Sufyān ibn Saʿīd — from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said:

On the Day of the Trench the Prophet ﷺ said, “Who will bring us news of the enemy?” Az-Zubayr rose and said, “I will, O Messenger of Allah.” He replied, “Every prophet has a hawārī (close disciple), and my hawārī is az-Zubayr.”

It was recorded by Muslim through this chain, and by al-Bukhārī through Sufyān’s narration.
