2700 – Jaʿfar ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Yaʿqūb narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn Hārūn al-Ruwayānī narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn Bashshār and ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī both said: Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to me; he said: Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid narrated to me; he said: Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim narrated to me, saying:
“I heard Saʿd say, ‘By Allah, I am the first Arab who ever loosed an arrow in the cause of Allah. We would campaign with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when we had nothing to eat save the leaves of the ḥubla plant and this samur tree (acacia), until one of us would pass droppings like a sheep—nothing mixed with them. Yet now the tribe of Banū Asad presume to rebuke me about the religion! If that is so, then I have surely failed and my deeds have come to nothing.’”
It was recorded by al-Bukhārī through Musaddad, and by Muslim through several chains from Ismāʿīl.
