Sharh Usul Itiqad Ahl al-Sunnah wa-al-JamaahAl-Lalakai
  1. Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Ṣawli related to us, from Muḥammad ibn al-Faḍl ibn al-Ummah, who said: “One day we gathered while travelling through a valley—everyone with us was either a jurist or a ḥadīth scholar—and this was at the very start of al-Muʿtamad’s caliphate. They mentioned Sufyān al-Thawrī’s statement: ‘The caliphs are five: the four Rightly Guided and ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.’ We all responded, ‘The sixth is al-Muhtadī; on that point we had no disagreement.’”
