Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related: Yaḥyā ibn Saʿid narrated to us; he said: Zakariyyā ibn Yaḥyā ibn Abī Zāʾidah narrated to us; he said: Abū Ṭalḥah Yaḥyā ibn Ṭalḥah al-Baṣrī said: I heard Saʿīd ibn Jumhān telling a report from Safīnah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “The caliphate in my community will last for thirty years; after that it will become kingship—or a succession of kings.” ⦗1470⦘ (Abū Ṭalḥah was unsure which of the two words was used.) Safīnah then counted out for me the years of Abū Bakr, the years of ʿUmar, the years of ʿUthmān, and the years of ʿAlī. I remarked, “Some people do not count the years of ʿAlī.” He retorted, “The hind-quarters of the Banū al-Zarqāʾ have lied!”
