I asked Abu Bistam, the freedman of Usamah ibn Zayd, “What about the people’s statement that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Whoever has me as his mawla (guardian and ally), ʿAli is his mawla’?” He replied, “Indeed, that is so. A dispute broke out between Usamah and ʿAli, so I went to the Prophet ﷺ and told him what had happened. He said, ‘O ʿAli, he (Usamah) is saying this to you, and by Allah, I truly love him.’ Then he said to Usamah, ‘O Usamah, he (ʿAli) is saying this to you, so whoever has me as his mawla, ʿAli is his mawla.’”
