2636 – ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Ziyād related to us, saying: Abū Ḥāmid Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Sharqī related to us; he said: Abū al-Azhar—reading aloud from his own manuscript—related to us; he said: Abū al-Jawwāb al-Aḥwaṣ ibn Jawwāb related to us; he said: Yūnus ibn Abī Isḥāq narrated to us, from al-Barāʾ, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched two detachments. He appointed ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib over one of them and Khālid ibn al-Walīd over the other, then announced, “If combat is joined, ʿAlī is the supreme commander.” ʿAlī went on to seize a fortress. (On another occasion Abū al-Azhar reported: “ʿAlī captured a stronghold.”) He selected a slave-girl for himself, and Khālid ibn al-Walīd sent a letter with me denouncing him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ read the letter, he said, “What do you say about a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love?” I replied, “I seek refuge with Allah from the anger of Allah and His Messenger.”
