2635 – Muhammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Naḍr narrated to us, saying: ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mubashshir narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Bayān narrated to us; he said: Khālid narrated to us, from Suhayl, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—declared, “I will certainly give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and through whose hands Allah will grant victory.” ʿUmar remarked, “Never before that day had I wished for authority.” The Prophet then summoned ʿAlī, handed the banner to him, and said, “Go forth and do not look back. Fight until Allah grants you victory.” ʿAlī waited a brief moment, then halted without turning and asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what shall I fight them over?” He replied, “Fight them until they bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Once they do that, they will have secured their blood and their property from you, while their reckoning rests with Allah.” ⦗1458⦘ Muslim recorded this narration.
