2624 – Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Nuʿaym, by written authorization, told us; Abū al-Walīd Ḥassān ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; he said: Ibrāhīm ibn Maḥmūd narrated to us; he said: Abū Sulaymān—namely Dāwūd ibn ʿAlī—relayed to me; he said: al-Ḥārith ibn Surayj al-Naqqāl narrated to us; he said: Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥajabī used to say to al-Shāfiʿī, “I have never seen a Qurashī who gives precedence to Abū Bakr and ʿUmar over ʿAlī except you.”

Al-Shāfiʿī replied, “ʿAlī is both my paternal and maternal cousin. I am a man of Banū ʿAbd Manāf, while you are from Banū ʿAbd al-Dār. If this were a point of honor, I would be more entitled to it than you; but the matter is not as you suppose.”
