2618 – Ahmad ibn Muhammad related to us; he said: Muhammad ibn Hamdan told us; he said: Muhammad ibn Ayyub narrated to us; he said: al-Hasan ibn ʿIsa narrated, saying:
“I heard a man ask Ibn al-Mubarak about someone … who does not give Abu Bakr and ʿUmar precedence. ‘Should he be beaten?’ the man asked.
Ibn al-Mubarak replied, ‘Whoever fails to prefer Abu Bakr and ʿUmar deserves to be shunned and kept at a distance.’
He added, ‘I heard Ibn al-Mubarak himself give Abu Bakr precedence, while he kept silent regarding ʿAli and ʿUthman. Ibn al-Mubarak greatly esteemed al-Fudayl and Abu Bakr ibn ʿAyyash, and had those two held any view other than preferring Abu Bakr and ʿUmar and had they not honored them …’
