2594 – Ghalib ibn ʿAli al-Razi said: “Bishr ibn Ahmad narrated to us; Ibn Nāḥiyah narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Maghrāʾ narrated to us; Shaykh ibn ʿĀmir narrated to us. He said:
‘I have never heard an elegy for ʿUthmān that pleases me more than the verses of Kaʿb ibn Mālik:
He folded his hands and closed his door,
Certain that Allah is never unaware.
He told the folk of the house: “Shed no blood;
May Allah pardon every soul that does not fight.”
So, have you not seen how Allah poured upon them
Enmity and hatred after bonds of accord?
And have you not seen how goodness turned away from the people after him,
Retreating like winds that flee in haste?’
