“While the Commander of the Believers, ʿUthmān, was delivering a sermon one day, a man rose and insulted him. The people struck at him until he backed down. Then someone said, ‘Do not let Ibn Salām’s presence stop you from cursing Naʿthal, for he is one of ʿUthmān’s supporters.’ I said to him, ‘You have uttered a terrible word—one that will be held against you on the Day of Resurrection—about the Caliph who came after Noah.’”
