2583 – ʿAlī ibn ʿUmar reported to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Yazīd narrated to us; he said: Aḥmad ibn Khalīl narrated to us; he said: Abū Nuʿaym told me, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Jaʿfar al-Anṣārī, who said:

“When the assailants burst in on ʿUthmān on the Day of the House, I left, gathering my cloak about me, and passed through the mosque. There I saw a man seated in the women’s portico, wearing a black turban and surrounded by about ten men. It was ʿAlī. He asked, ‘What has happened to the man?’ ⦗1440⦘ I replied, ‘He has been killed.’ He said, ‘Woe to them—may they be ruined until the end of time!’”
