2567 – Muhammad ibn ʿUthmān ibn Muḥammad reports: Muḥammad ibn Manṣūr Abū al-Jahm narrated to us; he said: Abū Ḥafṣ ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī narrated to us; he said: Ghassān ibn Muḍar narrated to us; he said: Abū Maslamah Saʿīd ibn Yazīd, from Abū Naḍrah, from Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī, said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once entered an orchard in Madinah, wrapped himself in his cloak, and closed the gate. A man came and knocked at the door. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘ʿAbd Allah ibn Qays, open for the one who is knocking and give him the glad tidings of Paradise.’ I opened it, and there stood Abū Bakr. I said, ‘Rejoice in the good news from Allah and His Messenger—rejoice in Paradise.’ He praised Allah and sat down.
“Then another man came and knocked. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘ʿAbd Allah ibn Qays, open for the one who is knocking and give him the glad tidings of Paradise.’ I opened it, and there was ʿUmar. I said, ‘Rejoice in the good news from Allah—rejoice in Paradise.’ He praised Allah and sat down.
“After a while, a man ⦗1430⦘ came and knocked. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘ʿAbd Allah ibn Qays, open for the one who is knocking and give him the glad tidings of Paradise—but he will face and face.’ I opened it, and it was ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān. I said, ‘Rejoice in the good news from Allah and His Messenger—rejoice in Paradise, though the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “He will face and face.”’ He praised Allah and sat down, downcast, wondering, ‘What is this statement he made about me that he did not say about my two companions?’”
