“When ʿUthmān was besieged and the people had surrounded him, he rose to address them and said, ‘I adjure you by Allah: do you know that when Mount Ḥirāʾ shook beneath us, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Steady, Ḥirāʾ, for upon you there is no one but a prophet, a ṣiddīq (a man of consummate truthfulness), or a martyr”?’ They replied, ‘O Allah, yes.’
He went on, ‘I adjure you by Allah: do you know that at the Expedition of Hardship the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proclaimed, “Who will give a donation that Allah will accept?” while the people that day were in dire straits and utterly exhausted, and that I equipped one-third of that army with my own wealth?’ They said, ‘O Allah, yes.’
He then said, ‘I adjure you by Allah: do you know that the Spring of Rūmah—no one could drink from it without paying—so I bought it with my own wealth and made it free for the rich, the poor, and the traveller?’ They replied, ‘O Allah, yes,’ and in addition he mentioned other virtues which he enumerated.”
