2563 – ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Yaʿqūb told us; he said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ḥātim told us; he said: Abū Saʿīd, Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān, told us; he said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ḥātim told us; he said: Abū Saʿīd, Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān, told us; he said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rajāʾ told us; he said: ʿUbayd ibn al-Ṭufayl told us; he said: Ribʿī ibn Ḥirāsh informed me, from ʿUthmān:

He proposed marriage to ʿUmar for ʿUmar’s daughter, but ʿUmar refused him. When this reached the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, and ʿUmar later came to see him, the Prophet said, “O ʿUmar, shall I not guide you to someone better for you than ʿUthmān, and guide ʿUthmān to someone better for him than you?” ʿUmar replied, “Yes, O Prophet of Allah.” He said, “Marry your daughter to me, and I shall marry my daughter to ʿUthmān.”
