2558 – ‘Īsā ibn ‘Alī narrated to us; he said: ‘Abd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated to us; he said: Dāwūd ibn ʿUmar narrated to us; he said: Ismāʿīl ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥarmalah informed me …
2559 – And Aḥmad ibn ʿUbayd likewise narrated to us; he said: ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mubashshir narrated to us; he said: Aḥmad ibn Sinān narrated to us; he said: Surayj ibn al-Nuʿmān narrated to us; he said: Ismāʿīl ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥarmalah, from ʿAṭāʾ, Sulaymān ibn Yasār, and Abū Salamah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was lying down in his house with his thigh—or his shin—uncovered. Abū Bakr asked permission to enter; he gave him leave while still in that state, and they talked. Then ʿUmar asked permission; he gave him leave while still in that state, and they talked. Then ʿUthmān asked permission, whereupon the Prophet ﷺ sat up and arranged his clothing.”
Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥarmalah added, “I do not claim that this all took place on a single day.” ʿUthmān entered and they spoke. When he left, ʿĀʾishah said, “Messenger of Allah, Abū Bakr came in and you did not stir or pay him special attention; then ʿUmar came in and you did not stir or pay him special attention; but when ʿUthmān came in, you sat up and straightened your clothes!” He replied, “Shall I not feel shy before a man before whom the angels are shy?”
Muslim recorded this narration through several transmitters from Ismāʿīl.
