2546 – ʿAlī ibn ʿUmar narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAttāb related to us; ʿUbayd related to us; Ibn Abī Maryam related to us. He said: Nāfiʿ ibn ʿUmar ibn Jamīl told me that Ibn Abī Mulaykah reported from ʿĀʾishah, the Prophet’s wife (Allah bless him and grant him peace), who said:
“When ʿUmar was stabbed, people heard:
[al-Baḥr al-Ṭawīl]
Peace be upon you, O commander, and blessed are you;
the hand of God was manifest in that patched leather cloak.
Who could run—or even ride upon an ostrich’s wings—
and ever catch up with the good you sent ahead, outstripping all?
You settled great matters and then departed,
leaving calamities still in their pods, not yet split open.”
Ibn Abī Mulaykah said: ʿĀʾishah recited, “in their pods, not yet split open,” and then added, “They split open after him.”
