2545 – ʿAlī ibn ʿUmar narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad informed us; ʿAbbās ibn Muḥammad related to us; Muḥammad ibn Bishr al-ʿAbdī, from Misʿar, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, from al-Ṣaqr ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:

“The jinn wept over ʿUmar three days before he was killed, chanting:

‘Alas for the one slain in Medina at dawn—
for him the very earth shuddered, and the pebbles in the markets trembled.

May Allah reward the finest of leaders with every good;
the hand of God was evident in that patched leather cloak.

Who could run—or even ride upon an ostrich’s wings—
and still catch up with what you, by firm resolve, had attained?

You concluded great matters, then departed,
leaving calamities still sheathed, not yet ripped open.

Never did I imagine that death would reach him
by the two hands of a sabantī—green-eyed, blue.’”
