2543 – ʿĪsā ibn ʿAlī related to us; he said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Baghawī informed us, saying: Dāwūd ibn ʿAmr narrated to us; he said: ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus narrated to us; he said: al-Aʿmash, from Zayd ibn Wahb, reported:

“We came to ʿAbd Allāh [ibn Masʿūd] when two men arrived who were disputing over a verse. He said to one of them, ‘Recite,’ and the man recited. ʿAbd Allāh then asked, ‘Who taught you to recite?’ He answered, ‘Abū Ḥakīm ….’

“Then he said to the other, ‘Recite,’ and asked him, ‘Who taught you to recite?’ He replied, ‘ʿUmar taught me.’ ʿAbd Allāh kept repeating, ‘Recite exactly as ʿUmar taught you.’

“Then he wept until I saw his tears fall upon the pebbles, after which he said, ‘ʿUmar was a mighty fortress shielding Islam: people would enter it and none would leave ⦗1416⦘. Now that fortress has been breached—people are leaving it, and none are entering.’"
