2537 – Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUthmān reported to us; he said: Aḥmad ibn Jaʿfar ibn Ḥamdān narrated to us; he said: ʿAbdullāh ibn Aḥmad narrated to us; he said: Abū ʿAmr al-Ḥārith ibn ⦗1410⦘ Miskīn al-Miṣrī narrated to us; he said: Ibn Wahb narrated to us, from Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb, from Ibn ʿAjlān, from Nāfiʿ, from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar:
ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb dispatched an army and placed over them a man called Sāriyah. While ʿUmar was delivering a sermon one day, he suddenly called out from the pulpit, “O Sāriyah, the mountain! O Sāriyah, the mountain!”
When the army’s messenger later arrived, ʿUmar questioned him about the battle. He replied, “O Commander of the Believers, we met our enemy and drove them back; then we heard a voice crying, ‘O Sāriyah, the mountain! O Sāriyah, the mountain!’ So we put our backs to the mountain, and Allah vanquished them.”
People said to ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb, “It was you who were calling those words!”
Ibn ʿAjlān added, “Iyās ibn Muʿāwiyah ibn Qurrah also related this to me.”
