2534 – Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jaʿfar al-Bazzār related to us; Saʿīd ibn Muḥammad, the brother of al-Zubayr, narrated to us; Isḥāq ibn Abī Isrāʾīl narrated to us; I heard Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah say—through a chain of transmission he ordinarily cited, and nothing else was conveyed to me besides it—he said:

“Abū Bakr and ʿUmar were nothing but a definitive proof against the people. Someone might say, ‘Who is capable of acting as the Messenger of Allah did?’ The reply is: ‘Abū Bakr and ʿUmar.’ Thus the two of them serve as a conclusive proof for mankind.”
