2523 – Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman informed us; Yahya ibn Muhammad ibn Saʿid told us; ʿAbd al-Jabbar ibn al-ʿAlaʾ narrated to us; Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah passed it down from Ismaʿil, from Qays, who said:

“I once saw ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab sitting while motioning with his hand, and beside him stood Shadid, the freedman of Abu Bakr, calling out, ‘Listen to the words of the Caliph of the Messenger of Allah! He says to you: By Allah, I have never held back any good from you.’ Shadid was holding Abu Bakr’s written decree naming ʿUmar as his successor.”
