2517 – Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jaʿfar al-Bazzār narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ghaylān narrated to us; he said: al-Ḥasan ibn al-Junayd narrated to us; he said: Isḥāq al-Azraq narrated to us; he said: Sufyān narrated to us, from Jāmiʿ ibn Abī Rāshid …
2518 – And I, Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn al-Faḍl al-Hāshimī, also report: ⦗1402⦘ al-Ḥusayn ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; he said: Saʿīd ibn Yaḥyā al-Umawī narrated to us; he said: my father narrated to us, from Sufyān al-Thawrī, from Jāmiʿ ibn Abī Rāshid, from Mundhir al-Thawrī, from Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah, who said:
I asked my father, “Dear father, who are the best of people after the Prophet ﷺ?” He replied, “Abu Bakr.”
I said, “And then who?”
He answered, “ʿUmar.”
I was afraid to ask, “And then who?” lest he say, “ʿUthmān.” So I said instead, “And what about you, dear father?” He said, “I am but a man from among the Muslims.”
The wording here follows the narration of Isḥāq al-Azraq. Al-Bukhārī also recorded this ḥadīth.
