2513 – Ahmad ibn ʿUbayd narrated to us; ʿAli ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Mubashshir narrated to us; Muhammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us; Abu ʿĀmir al-ʿAqadī narrated to us; Rabbāḥ ibn Abī Maʿrūf al-Makkī narrated, from Saʿīd ibn ʿAjlān, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
The Prophet ﷺ said to Abu Bakr and ʿUmar, “Shall I not tell the two of you who your counterparts are among the angels, and who your counterparts are among the prophets?
Abu Bakr, your counterpart among the angels is Michael, who comes down with mercy, and your counterpart among the prophets is Abraham. When his people denied him and did to him what they did, he said, ‘So whoever follows me is truly of me; and whoever disobeys me—indeed You are All-Forgiving, Most Merciful’ (Qur’an 14:36).
ʿUmar, your counterpart among the angels is Gabriel, who descends with power, severity, and retribution against the enemies of Allah; and your counterpart among the prophets is Noah, who said, ‘My Lord, do not leave on the earth a single dweller from among the disbelievers’ (Qur’an 71:26).”
