2483 – Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us; he said: Abū Ḥāmid al-Ḥaḍramī reported to us; he said: Abū Hammām al-Walīd ibn Shujāʿ reported to us; he said: Ayyūb ibn Jābir reported to us, from ʿĀṣim ibn Abī al-Najūd, from Zirr, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Last night, Abū Bakr, I saw myself at a well. I drew up one bucketful—or two. Then you came, Abū Bakr, and you also drew one bucketful—or two—yet you are weak; may Allah have mercy on you. Then ʿUmar arrived and drew from it until the bucket turned into a great waterskin, and the people watered their animals to the full and made camp at the watering places.”
Abū Bakr interpreted the vision, saying, “The authority after you will pass to me, and ʿUmar will succeed me.” He ﷺ added, “And that is exactly how the angel interpreted it.”
