2479 – Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman reported to us; he said: ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Baghawi reported to us; he said: my grandfather reported to us; he said: Hushaym narrated to us. ʿUbayd Allah ibn Muʿadh al-ʿAnbari likewise read to us from his own manuscript; he said: my father narrated to me; he said: Humayd al-Tawil, from Anas ibn Malik, who said:
Umar ibn al-Khattab declared, “My Lord agreed with me in three matters—or, as I also said, I concurred with my Lord in three. I suggested, ‘If only we—or you, Messenger of Allah—were to adopt the Station of Abraham as a place of prayer.’ I was also informed that something had occurred between the Mothers of the Believers and the Prophet ﷺ, so I went to them and said, ‘Either you restrain yourselves toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, or Allah will replace him with wives better than you.’ I went round to each of the Mothers of the Believers, whereupon they said, ‘O Umar, is there not in the Messenger of Allah a noble example—does he not admonish his own wives so that you should have to admonish them?’ At that I remained silent. Then Allah revealed: ‘It may be that, if he divorces you, his Lord will give him in exchange wives better than you’ (Quran 66:5).”
This is the wording transmitted by ʿUbayd Allah ibn Muʿadh. Al-Bukhari also recorded it.
