2451 – Ahmad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Khadr informed us; he said: Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah informed us; he said: Muʿadh ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us; he said: Muhammad ibn ʿAbbad narrated to us; he said: Sufyan, on the authority of al-Walid ibn Kathir, from Ibn Sayyad, from Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib, said:
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, Mecca resounded with a single, unanimous cry. Abu Quhafah heard it and asked, “What is that?” They replied, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has died.” He said, “What have the people done after him?” They answered, “They have placed your son in authority.” He asked, “Have the Banu ʿAbd Shams and the Banu al-Mughira accepted that?” They said, “Yes.” He responded, “No one can withhold what Allah bestows, and no one can bestow what He withholds.”
Later, when his son died, Mecca again shook with the news of his passing. He asked, “What is that?” They replied, “Your son has died.” He said, “This is momentous news.”
