2449 – ‘Īsā b. ‘Alī related to us; ‘Abd Allāh b. Muḥammad related to us; he said: Dāwūd b. ‘Amr narrated to us; he said: ‘Abd al-Jabbār narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, who said:
‘Āʾishah said:
When death approached my father he summoned me and said, “My daughter, I once assigned Khaybar to you, but you never actually took possession of it. I would now like you to return it to me.”
I replied, “May Allah forgive you, Father. By Allah, even if Khaybar were entirely gold I would still give it back to you.”
He said, “Then let it be disposed of according to the Book of Allah, my daughter. I used to trade on behalf of Quraysh and was among the wealthiest of them, but once leadership pre-occupied me I reflected on whatever wealth might have accrued to me—(Dāwūd mentioned two or three words that I did not retain)—namely: the qatwānī cloak, al-Khilāb, and the servant. When I have passed away, hasten with it to Ibn al-Khattāb. My daughter, these garments of mine—shroud me in them.”
I wept and said, “Father, we can easily afford better than that.”
He replied, “May Allah forgive you; is it anything more than a brief interlude?”
When he died, I sent all of that to Ibn al-Khattāb, who said, “May Allah have mercy on your father; he was determined to leave no one any grounds for criticism.”
