2447 – Muḥammad b. ʿUthmān b. Muḥammad al-Daqīqī informed us; he said: Muḥammad b. Nūḥ narrated to us; he said: Hārūn b. Isḥāq narrated to us; he said: Wakīʿ narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Masrūq, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
During the illness in which he died, Abū Bakr said, “Look into whatever has increased in my wealth since I assumed authority, and send it on to the caliph who will succeed me.” He then added another remark: “I had earned some tallow, roughly the same amount I used to earn through trade.”
ʿĀʾishah continued: After he passed away, we examined the matter and found a strong slave who used to carry his children, and a she-camel for drawing water. We sent both to ʿUmar. ʿUmar wept and said, “May Allah have mercy on Abū Bakr; he has placed a heavy burden on those who come after him.”
