2444 – ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad al-Muqriʾ told us; he said: al-Ḥusayn b. Ismāʿīl narrated to us; he said: Yaʿqūb al-Dawraqī narrated to us; he said: Wakīʿ narrated to us, from Mālik b. Mighwal, from Ṭalḥah b. Muṣarrif, who said:

I asked ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Awfā, “Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ leave any bequest?” He replied, “No.” I then said, “So how did he command the Muslims to make bequests?” He answered, “He bequeathed the Book of Allah.”

Hudhayl b. Shuraybīl remarked, “And would Abū Bakr presume to govern over the Prophet’s executor? Abū Bakr longed for even the slightest written covenant from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—had he found one, he would have pierced his own nose with a ring (out of absolute submission).”
