Aḥmad b. ʿUmar b. Muḥammad al-Asbahānī informed us; he said: ʿAbd Allah b. Muḥammad b. Ziyād narrated to us; he said: Aḥmad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Wahbī narrated to us; he said: Ibn Wahb narrated to us, from Uways, from al-Zuhrī, who said: ʿUbayd Allah b. ʿAbd Allah related to me, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
“When death approached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and there were men in the house—among them ʿUmar—the Prophet said, ‘Come here, so that I may write a document for you after which you will never go astray.’
ʿUmar replied, ‘Pain has overwhelmed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and you already have the Quran; the Book of Allah is sufficient for us.’
The people in the house then differed and argued. Some said, ‘Bring him the materials so that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ may write ⦗1368⦘ for you,’ while others repeated what ʿUmar had said. When their noise and disagreement grew before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said, ‘Leave me.’
ʿUbayd Allah continued: Ibn ʿAbbās would remark, ‘The calamity—the complete calamity—was that their dispute and clamor prevented the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from writing that document for them.’
Al-Bukhārī also recorded this report through Yaḥyā b. Sulaymān, from Ibn Wahb.
