2440 – Muhammad b. ʿAbd al-Rahman b. al-ʿAbbas narrated to us; he said: Abu Ahmad ʿAbd al-Wahid b. al-Muhtadi-bi-Allah narrated to us; he said: Yahya b. Jaʿfar narrated to us; he said: Muhammad b. Khalid narrated to us; he said: Jaʿfar b. Sulayman narrated to us, from Ismaʿil b. Umayyah, from Saʿid b. al-Musayyab, who said:

ʿAli b. Abi Talib came out to pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr while the people—and the Helpers—were still discussing the matter. He called out so that everyone could hear, “Which one of you would hold back the man whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed ahead?”—meaning Abu Bakr. With that, ʿAli spoke a word whose equal no one else had uttered.
