2430 – Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Naḍr narrated to us; he said: ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mubashshir related to us; he said: ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Bayān narrated to us; he said: Khālid ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, from Yūnus, from al-Ḥasan, who said:

ʿUmar brought a ṣadaqah (charitable gift) to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and announced it publicly, saying, “Messenger of Allah, this is a charity I am placing in your hands.” Then he left.

After him Abū Bakr came with a ṣadaqah, but he kept it hidden, saying, “Messenger of Allah, this is a charity I have deposited with Allah.” Then he, too, left.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remarked, “The degree of excellence between your two charities is like the difference between the words you have just spoken.”
