2429 – ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUmar ibn Aḥmad narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Yaʿqūb related to us; he said: my grandfather, Yaʿqūb ibn Shaybah, related to us; he said: al-Faḍl ibn Dukayn Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us; he said: Hishām ibn Saʿd narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, who said:
I heard ʿUmar say: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed us to give in charity, and at that time I happened to possess some wealth. I said to myself, ‘Today I shall outstrip Abū Bakr—if ever there were a day to surpass him.’ So I came with half of my property. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, ‘What have you left for your family?’ I replied, ‘An equal amount.’
“Then Abū Bakr arrived with everything he owned. The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Abū Bakr, what have you left for your family?’ He answered, ‘I have left them Allah ⦗1357⦘ and His Messenger.’ At that I admitted, ‘I shall never be able to rival you in anything, ever.’”
