2408 – And I, Aḥmad ibn ʿUbayd, (also narrate): ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mubashshir narrated to us; he said: Aḥmad ibn Sinān narrated to us; he said: Wahb ibn Jarīr narrated to us; he said: I heard my father say: I heard Yaʿlā recount from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out during the illness from which he died, his head bound with a cloth. He sat upon the pulpit, praised Allah and exalted Him, then said: “There is no one among the people who has shown me greater kindness with his self and his wealth than Abu Bakr ibn Abī Quḥāfah. Had I been allowed to take anyone ⦗1349⦘ from mankind as an intimate friend (khalīl), I would certainly have taken Abu Bakr, but the fellowship of Islam is superior. Block off every small doorway in the mosque except the doorway of Abu Bakr.” Al-Bukhārī recorded this report.
