2386 – ʿAlī ibn ʿUmar reported: Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad said, “I asked my father about a man who reviles one of the Prophet’s Companions, peace and blessings be upon him. He replied, ‘In my view he should be flogged.’ I said to him, ‘Should the fixed ḥadd penalty be applied?’ He would not specify a ḥadd; he only said, ‘He is to be beaten, and I do not consider him to remain within Islam.’”
